About Dashain
Dashain is the biggest festival in Nepal. It is celebrated for 15 days by Hindus of Nepal and anywhere in the world. It is also known as Navaratri in Sanskrit.
All government offices, educational institutions, and other offices remain closed during the festival period. Family, friends, and relatives gather together and enjoy the festival with different delicious foods and drinks. Among 15 days first, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, and fifteenth are mostly celebrated.
Day 1: Ghatasthapana
It is the first day of the festival. Ghatasthapana exactly means placing a kalasha or a pot, which symbolizes goddess Durga in the middle of Jamara. Jamara is planted in which different grains are kept. Jamara and kalasha is kelpt in Dashain Ghar.
Day 7: Phulpati
Fulpati is the seventh day of the festival. The fulpati festival includes showering flowers( फूल) and leaves(पाती) to Goddess Durga on this day. The first day of the Dashain is Ghatasthapana and 7th day is Fulpati and the 10th day is Vijaya Dasami.
Day 8: Maha Astami
It is the eighth day of the festival. People pray to Goddess Durga who is also known as Kali. They offer animals like buffaloes, goats, hens, and ducks in temples all around the country. The blood of the animal is offered to the god. Similarly, the meat from the animals is then cooked and shared with family as a blessed food, bringing good luck.
Day 9: Maha Navami
Maha Navami or “the great ninth day is the 9th day of the Dashain. The army does a special ceremony with buffalo sacrifices and firing guns in Tudhikhel, Kathmandu. Nepalese People believe it’s a day to keep their tools and vehicles safe. So they offer animal blood to them.
Day 10: Vijaya Dashami
It is the tenth day of the festival. It is the main and biggest day of the whole Dashain festival. On this day, People make a special mix of rice, yogurt, and vermilion, called “tika”. Elder people put tika on the forehead of the younger generation with blessings. They also give a little money, called “Dakshina,” to the younger ones. Family, friends, and relatives exchange tika with each other and have delicious food.
Day 11: Papakunsha Ekadashi
The eleventh day of the festival is known as Papakunsha Ekadashi. Ekadashi is considered a very lucky day and often fast during this time.
Day 15: Purnima
It is the last day of the festival. It is Kojagrat Purnima or Sharad Purnima, which is the full moon day.
